Regular carpet and upholstery cleaning increases the life of your carpet and upholstery for years.

Did you know regular carpet  cleaning increases the life of your carpet up to four times?  Yep.  Same for your upholstery also. Carpet makers recommend cleaning on a yearly basis even if your carpet looks clean.  If you have pets or kids who spill, you may need to clean every six months.

What about the old wives tale about waiting as long as possible to clean?

Years ago people thought it was best to wait as long as possible before cleaning.  See, here’s the truth about steam cleaning.

When professional carpet cleaners started using the steam cleaning method, large amounts of water was used.  And yes, sometimes water so hot that it would steam.  These cleaning pioneers often used strong cleaning agents with neutralizer afterwards.  And even worse, so much water was used that the carpet stayed  soaking wet.  Wet carpet also meant that the dirty water still remained in the carpet.

So a few days or weeks later, all the spots could wick up from the backing.  Some returned even worse than before the cleaning.

At AJS Carpet Cleaning, Inc., we take the time to do the job right.  Our service may cost a little more than cheap guys, but you’ll see the difference in quality of service and outcome of your cleaning.  Your cleaning will have the least residue and fastest drying possible to prevent spots from returning.

Your upholstered fabrics may need to be protected.

An often overlooked feature of upholstery cleaning is Fabric Protection.
Fabric Protection may be just as important as the cleaning itself. When carpet is cleaned, many consumers see the value in protecting the carpet, but don’t seem to think it’s necessary when it comes to protecting upholstery fabric after it is cleaned.

There is a great deal of difference between upholstery fabric and carpet.

Carpet is usually made from a synthetic fabric such as Nylon or Olefin. Natural fibers such as wool are used but do not represent the majority. Upholstery fabric on the other hand is most often made from natural fabric. Cotton is widely used for example.

Natural fibers are much more absorbent than synthetic fibers.
This is an advantage to you when selecting a fabric because the more absorbent the fiber, the better it accepts dye and the more dying techniques can be used.. This gives you a wide range of choices in color and style.

The disadvantage of an absorbent fiber is that it stains easily.
Foreign dye that is used in beverages for example can more easily stain a natural fiber. Even synthetic upholstered fabrics are more vulnerable than carpet. The reason is how the fabric is made. With carpet, you have a pile, a backing (usually synthetic also), and a thick pad underneath. This gives a spill a lot of room to spread. With upholstered fabric, you have a thin layer of fabric to penetrate. Once the stain is in the stuffing, it is more difficult to remove. With carpet, you could even “pull the carpet up” and deal with problem spots from underneath if you had to. But not upholstered fabrics.

A good quality fabric protector will assist in resisting spillage,
and keep normal soiling such as airborne soils, dust, pet dander, and perspiration on the surface for easier removal. Keeping your upholstery protected will help you keep your upholstery looking better longer. Our company is well qualified to apply a quality fabric protector to your upholstery.

Why Hot, Humid Days Activate Odors in Your Carpet, Upholstery & Rugs

Humidity reactivates odors.  Drink spills, pet stains, soil from shoes– they all have odor causing bacteria.  They linger in your carpet, rugs, and upholstery until they are rinsed out.

Urine has alkaline crystals that eventually dry up after several months.  But when a humid day kicks in, you will  smell the odor again.  The odors can linger for years.

What happens when you spill a drink like coffee?  Sugars are embedded in the fibers.  Tannin and dyes in the drink bond to the fibers as well.

Misting a good spot cleaner on the stain and wiping with an absorbent cloth helps.  But the stain REALLY needs to be rinsed.

I suggest you purchase a small Bissell type spot machine available at most department stores.  But remember, the smaller the machine, the more likely you are to get it out when a spill occurs.  Huge bulky machines tend to sit in the closet.  Get something that’s light and easy to use.

If it’s a spill, first extract all the liquid from the carpet.  Then, mist on a quality spot remover.  Call our office if you need recommendations for good spotters.  In Orem, you may get good recommendations also from our friends and suppliers at Superior Cleaning Solutions.

Last, rinse the area with pure water from your small spot removal machine.  That’s it!

Just remember to act fast.  The tips above can save you from ugly permanent stains.

Of course, carpet and rug makers still recommend a yearly cleaning.  The cleaning will completely rinse those spots and odors out.

And for severe odor and pet problems, call us right away.

We employ the best cleaning agents to neutralize odors.

We even have a tool that can pull pet urine from your carpet padding.

More Carpet Cleaning tips – about Berber carpeting…

Remember, when buying carpeting,  you get what you pay for!

Dark colored berber carpets can be a good choice in any type of fiber.  The dark color will not show the oil absorption or scratched traffic lanes as readily.

“Cut Berber”
This is the new style of carpet that looks like a berber pattern, but it is actually termed “Frieze”.  The Frieze carpet has all the benefits of berber, but you don’t have to worry about the loops unraveling.  A nylon frieze is a very sturdy carpet in most cases.  Try to avoid light colored polyester Frieze carpet as it can show oils in traffic lanes.

If you ever have any questions about what type of carpet may be suitable for you, call Jim at 801 224-1474.

Berber Carpets – Godsend or devil’s end?

Some homeowners love their berber carpets.  Others regret the day it was installed.  What type of beBerber Carpet ?rber carpet will last?  Or better yet, in what situations will a berber carpet last?  This article will help you understand berber carpeting.

Many homeowners choose berber for the contemporary look, the “no track marks” where you walk, or the often mistaken ease of clean-ability.

Each fiber type and carpet style has different benefits.  The type of carpet you purchase should depend largely upon who lives in your home.  First, let me say that if you have pets that are prone to scratching at your carpet, you should avoid berber completely.  Your pet may snag your carpet and pull up the fibers.

Many berber carpets are made of olefin, which is a VERY stain resistant fiber.  Kool-aid, bleach, and peroxide do not stain olefin fibers as quickly (but it can still happen).  However, it absorbs oils more than other fibers.  The biggest problem with berber is that most are very light colored.  The traffic patterns begin to show oil accumulation and scratches when it starts to wear.  Because of this potential problem, if you have pets or kids, a light colored berber may not be the best choice for you.  A dark colored olefin berber would be better.

Some berbers are made from nylon or wool.  The fibers will not scratch or show oil like an olefin berber will.  They are much more durable.  However, these fibers are prone to kool-aid, bleach, pet stains, and peroxide spills.  If your home is not prone to these types of stains, a nylon or wool carpet can be a very good choice.  If you must have a light colored berber, a nylon or wool would be better.  However, even with the best grade of carpet, a very light colored fiber will never last as long as the same carpet in a darker color.
