My name is Victor, and I would just like to tell you a little about myself, and how I came to be involved with AJS Carpet Cleaning, Inc.

In December 2000, my wife Verna and I migrated from Jamaica to Utah, to join our children, four of whom had already graduated from BYU, while the youngest had just been admitted to the Industrial Design faculty there.

We didn’t like the “empty nest”.

Of course, our primary concern quickly became “how to make a living here?”

It didn’t take us long to conclude that we needed to go into business for ourselves, and that the type of business we started should:

require very little working capital for start-up

have a short learning curve

require employees with minimal technical skills

be service oriented

be in high demand locally

We decided to start a Janitorial Services business, and chose the name “Able Janitorial Services”

It was fairly easy to start up a janitorial services business, and our business grew as we attracted clients through referrals from our satisfied clients.

On advice from our eldest son, we added carpet cleaning to our portfolio of services, and the result is history.

Currently, carpet cleaning accounts for 95% of our income stream.

AJS Carpet Cleaning, Inc. has achieved the status of Approved Service Provider by The Carpet and Rug Institute.
This means that you can be confident that we are able to provide you competent professional carpet cleaning services that will meet the warranty requirements of your carpet manufacturers.

It also means that the solvents we use to clean your carpet are also approved and we have been properly trained to use them.

This year we reach the milestone of 10 years carpet and upholstery cleaning along the Wasatch Front in Utah.

Here is a report on AJS Carpet Cleaning, Inc. posted to Angie’s List by one of our clients:

Member Comments:

AJS cleaned an area rug in my living room, and they cleaned the carpet on my stairs, in my hallway and in two bedrooms

FABULOUS!!! I had almost given up on trying to get my carpets cleaned because I was always disappointed with the results. I decided to give AJS a try because I had heard good things about them. The entire experience was wonderful. They were friendly on the phone and accommodated to my schedule when making the appointment. The workers were extremely friendly and considerate. My most favorite thing, however, was how fabulous my carpet looked when they were finished. The owner asked me to look at the carpet before he left and as I walked around the corner I was almost shocked at how white they were. I was ecstatic. Best of all, they still look that way!!! When they were finished the carpet was only damp to the touch and dried quickly. They were quick and affordable. I am so extremely pleased with everything that I will continue to use AJS for all of my carpet and upholstery cleaning needs. I have already recommended them to all of my family!!

We are not the cheapest carpet cleaning company you can find.

We are not the most expensive, either…

AJS Carpet Cleaning, Inc. is simply the best!

Call 801 368-0705 for a FREE ESTIMATE TODAY…

Many people often call for carpet cleaning price quotations and it soon becomes obvious that they are only shopping around to find the cheapest cleaning service. While it is commendable, and actually prudent to seek to save money in today’s economic environment, a word of caution here is certainly in order. The cheapest carpet cleaning service, like any other service or commodity, is never usually the best, and there are obvious reasons for this.

It is relatively easy for anyone to start a carpet cleaning business. Many people just rent a small portable carpet cleaner and get some “soap” from a home depot like store, and then offer up themselves as carpet cleaners at a very low price. Others will acquire low end, used machines which they will then mount into an old trailer or truck, and try to attract customers with an offer price that seems too good to be true. Right. That is usually, really, too good to be true.

Most of these people will be uninformed and uneducated about carpet cleaning, or just simply unscrupulous. Beware! Competent, efficient cleaning is both an art and a science. The art form devolves from the practice of cleaning, which is a science. That is why a good carpet cleaner must be both experienced and educated. This status cannot be achieved without significant expenditures, which must be factored into the pricing of any business.

To provide the best service, the company must use top of the line truck mounted equipment which will cost anywhere between $50,000 to $70,000 for each unit. Operating expenses including vehicle and equipment maintenance, fuel, chemicals, insurance, licenses, and advertising and marketing, must then be covered.

The most important element in the cleaning enterprise however, is the cleaner himself. The best equipment, chemicals, and procedures will not make a real difference to the consumer, if the carpet cleaner is ignorant, uneducated, sloppy, indifferent, or dishonest.

Good carpet cleaning companies must select their technicians carefully, train them scrupulously and intensively, in the classroom and on the job, and have their background checked carefully and exhaustively, before sending them into your private sanctuary. In any case, they will always be insured and bonded.

In order to attract and retain employees like this, good wages must be paid. How then can such a company offer their services for $9 per room?

Remember, we always get what we pay for. If someone offers you a late model Mercedes for the price of a 10-year-old KIA…watch out! Something’s fishy here.

Of course there are many levels of competence in the carpet cleaning business, and you have many choices in between the scammers and the gougers. Just do some due diligence. Check out the credentials of any company you propose to hire. See what their former clients are saying about them. Evaluate carefully before you decide.

When contemplating carpet cleaning, most people will only consider the aesthetics or appearance factor, but there are also other important health and financial issues to be borne in mind. Soiling on your carpet is obviously not good for several reasons, as outlined below. Soiling diminishes the beauty of the carpet. It harbors insects, microbes and pathogens. And some types of soils cause wear and tear. Regular carpet cleaning by efficient professional carpet cleaners is therefore essential.

Fortunately, almost all carpeting being sold today, comes with a soil and stain resistant finish that repels soiling, but this obviously does not guarantee that your carpet will remain clean indefinitely. The finish will wear off with time, or with treatment by harsh chemicals, and will need to be replaced eventually. It is also not effective for all types of stains, and often, the soiling just lodges on the surface or between the carpet fibers. There are basically three types of soil.

1. Water Soluble – Usually consisting of soluble sugars, starches, and other food residues.
2. Organic or Inorganic Solvent Soluble – Like oils, tar, grease, make-up, paint, etc.
3. Insoluble – Sand, quartz, pollen, hair, mites, etc.

Most of the soil in your carpet will be insoluble, and this will cause the most physical damage. This type of soil is usually hard and abrasive, and with wearing, will cause the carpet fibers to be scratched and chafed. Over time, the light reflecting properties of the carpet fibers will change, and this will cause it to look worn.

The other kinds of soil also cause damage if not removed quickly. Water soluble soils from food or drink spills are usually acid in nature, and may react with the dyes in the carpet and cause the color to fade. Solvent soluble soils will cause yellowing as they react with the oxygen in the air and generate resinous by-products.

Insects and mites cause damage by sometimes feeding on the carpet fibers, but mostly by excreting products that are harmful. Bacteria also multiply as they feed on the insect excrement, and they themselves carry or generate pathogens that are deleterious to your health.

Your carpet is indeed a filter. In fact I believe it is the most efficient filter in the home. It collects everything, from particulates tracked into the home on the soles of busy feet, to dust, pollen, and atmospheric pollution in the interior environment. Sometimes the existence of soiling is not apparent. The carpet may appear to be clean, because it is not showing up any ugly stains. Don’t get complacent. Unseen pollutants may still be steadily and actively causing damage to your carpet, and harm to your health.

Vacuum. Often. Clean up spots, spills, and stains immediately you become aware of them. Call in a professional carpet cleaner to deep clean your carpet at least once a year. Carpet manufacturers actually recommend a deep steam carpet cleaning every 18 to 24 months, but it is certainly better to do it more often if you can.

A word about vacuuming here. “Often” means at least once per week, but if you can do it every day, that’s great! It is particularly important to vacuum daily if you have kids, pets or heavy traffic in the home. Also, maintain your vacuum properly, according to the manufacturer’s operating instructions. Above all, do not allow the dust collector to become overloaded. By consistently following these tips, you will avoid damage to your carpet by soiling, and extend its lifetime considerably.

Wool carpet needs special cleaning care and maintenance due to its unique characteristics. Recently I received a call from someone who needed help with their wool carpet. They had just used a small home carpet steamer on it, and shortly thereafter, yellow stains appeared all over it.

Most carpets found in the average home today are made from synthetic material, usually nylon, that is formulated to be more resistant and less sensitive to certain conditions than wool.

Wool carpet, as the name suggests, is made from the fleece of sheep, and is therefore composed of natural protein fibers. That is why it smells like wet sheep when it is wet. Incidentally, that is the smell of sulphur, one of the natural components of the wool fiber.

Wool carpet is expensive not just because of its composition, but also because of the special processes employed in manufacturing. We will not go into that here, however. Suffice it to say that any home environment is beautifully enhanced with wool carpeting.

Some of the advantages of wool carpeting are:

Beauty. Wool is an opaque fiber whereas synthetics are transparent. It therefore has great soil hiding properties. It absorbs a wide variety of dyes and reacts well to many dyeing techniques. Thus an almost limitless variety of colors and patterns may be used in the manufacturing of wool carpet.

Strength. Wool is a very strong, durable and resilient fiber and will look beautiful even after undergoing the stress of heavy traffic. That is one reason why it is so popular in the finer banks and hotels. It will last on the average for 25-30 years, versus most synthetics which often have to be replaced after 10 years.

It is an excellent insulator.

It is naturally stain resistant.

Has great soil release properties. Moisture makes the fibers swell and release dirt easily.

Naturally flame resistant. Wool fibers will not ignite spontaneously if exposed to flames and they self extinguish quickly.

Some disadvantages, besides the cost, are:

It stains easily. Wool will absorb stains from spills just as easily as it absorbs the beautiful colors from dyes used in manufacturing.

It is very sensitive to certain chemicals. It should not be exposed to chemicals with a pH below 5 or above 9.

It can be damaged by excessive agitation. Fuzzing occurs when it is vacuumed by certain types of vacuum cleaners. Wool carpeting is also very prone to fiber distortion due to excessive agitation.

Because of the above properties, the following care and maintenance procedures are recommended for wool.

Vacuum often. At least three times per week.

Blot up spots and spills immediately.

Maintain cleaning temperatures below 120 degrees F

Never use chemical brighteners, bleaches, household detergents, or other alkaline products on wool.

Avoid “oxy” cleaners.

Do not over wet during cleaning. Use as little water as practicable.

Dry the carpet as quickly and as thoroughly as possible, immediately after cleaning.

The person mentioned above who experienced the discoloration problem, was calling on behalf of his mother who, he said, had not had the carpet cleaned in over 6 years. She then decided to use a rented carpet cleaning machine and do the job herself.

This might work if you are familiar with the properties of wool carpeting, and know which chemicals to use, and what to avoid when cleaning this type of carpet, but if not, your safest, most economical and best option, is to call in a professional carpet cleaner.

More Carpet Cleaning Tips From AJS Carpet Cleaning in Provo Utah

Have you ever seen that ugly old spot re-appear, shortly after you have had it removed like magic, by your carpet cleaner? I am aware that sometimes this can happen repeatedly. Why does that happen?

Well, there are three main reasons why spots or stains on your carpet can return soon after cleaning.

1. Wicking

2. Residue from cleaning agents

3. Residue from oily stains

Wicking is a kind of diffusion process whereby a material will move from an area of higher concentration to an adjoining area of lower concentration, usually in the presence of moisture.

Some of you older folks may remember the kerosene lamp which had a wick or strip of canvas immersed into a bed of oil. The wick was lighted and the oil kept diffusing upwards toward the dry end near to the flame, until it was totally consumed. Wicking occurs in a carpet when there is over wetting. The moisture saturates the carpet backing or the pad underneath, which will then retain residues of the soil and stains.

If the carpet is not properly dried, then wicking will begin to occur almost immediately, as the water in the substrate diffuses up towards the partially dried carpet surface, taking dissolved solids with it. Presto. The stain reappears. This happens most frequently in glued down carpet that has a lot of compacted soil in it.

Fortunately, this condition can be corrected. The area needs to be flooded, extracted again, and properly dried. Sometimes, an absorbent cotton toweling material has to be left over the stain with a heavy object over it, until all the soil or stain is absorbed.

Residue from cleaning agents that has been left behind by your carpet cleaner, can also lead to re-soiling.

Many of these cleaning agents are over the counter products and consumers sometimes do not read the labels carefully, or simply do not clearly understand the applications. Incompatible chemicals may cause unexpected reactions which can lead to disastrous results. Avoid using these chemicals if you can. It is better to call in a professional carpet cleaner. This could save you money in the long run. It might even spare you the expense of having to replace the carpet altogether.

If you have to do an emergency clean-up, use the spotting agent sparingly, and rinse and blot thoroughly afterwards.

Sometimes an ill-informed carpet cleaner may also use highly alkaline cleaning solutions and fail to neutralize it afterwards, leaving a soapy residue in the carpet that will simply attract and hold soils unto the carpet fibers again. Check out the credentials of the carpet cleaning company you hire.

Residue from oily stains can also cause re-soiling. These stains may come from a spill of body oils, lotions, solvents, or from duct tape residue. If the spill is not totally extracted, then it may re-appear as soon as the carpet has to bear heavy traffic. Sometimes this type of oily residue may not be detected at first, even by an experienced carpet cleaner.

Don’t worry however. A good carpet cleaning company will be able to diagnose this problem and correct it for you.

Finally, be careful how you choose your carpet cleaner. Cheap products used by cheap cleaners can lead to expensive disasters. Unscrupulous cleaners may also use optical brighteners to make the carpet look clean. This is often just an illusion, and the spot will re-appear quite quickly, because the soil or stain is still there.

You can get rid of all those spots. Just get competent carpet cleaning service.

AJS Carpet Cleaning, Inc. is a local company based in Orem Utah, just north of the border with Provo.

801 368-0705

Carpet cleaning can be a relatively expensive proposition, and you face certain risks when you invite a stranger into your home or business place.

Here are some insightful questions you should ask every carpet cleaning company, in order to help you to decide whether or not you should engage their services.

1. What method or methods do you use?

There are several methods of carpet cleaning available for use, and each kind has advantages and disadvantages. Try to determine and decide which will be most suitable for your particular situation.

2. Does spot cleaning cost extra?

Most carpet cleaners will include spot removal in their regular basic pricing. Some companies will quote really low prices to get their foot in the door and then hit you with a plethora of add-on charges.

3. Do you include pet urine treatment in the price?

Be sure to point out problems and situations like this, and get an exact quote before you hire the company.

4. Is odor treatment included in the price?

See number 3 above. Know what you will be called upon to pay for before the carpet cleaner begins to work for you.

5. Do you vacuum the carpet first?

You might be called upon to do this yourself in preparation for your cleaning.

6. Do you pre-treat the carpet?

This is an essential step in carpet cleaning that should never be ignored. Be wary of carpet cleaners who will not include this step in their cleaning process.

7. Will you pre-groom the carpet?

Pre-grooming is absolutely essential particularly on cut pile, plush pile or shag type carpets. This will not only elevate the carpet fibers so that the emulsifier can reach all sides, but it will also loosen and lift particulates prior to vacuuming and pretreatment.

8. Will you speed dry the carpet with air movers?

Ask for this step if you need to have the carpet dry quickly after deep steam or hot water cleaning, and your carpet has been wet extensively. This is especially important if your carpet is woven or tufted and is of dense pile construction. After this type of cleaning, the carpet should be completely dry in 4 to 6 hours.

9. Do you give a free bottle of spot remover?

Many good carpet cleaning companies will make this nice gesture to all their clients. The bottle of spot remover will sometimes have the company name and contact information imprinted on it, so this gesture brings along some serendipity.

10. Will you give a free pair of shoe covers?

Shoe covers are nice to have if you must walk on your carpet before it is completely dry.

11. Are you certified by the IICRC?

This is the premier organization for certification of carpet cleaners. Many carpet and rug manufacturers will only honor their warranty if your carpet is cleaned by a company certified by the IICRC.

12. How long have you been operating in this area?

13. What kind of guarantee do you offer on your services?

A good carpet cleaning company will not hesitate to offer a full guarantee on their services.

14. Is your cleaning environmentally friendly?

IF you need green cleaning, ask for it. Most of the better carpet cleaning companies will be able to provide this service. It may cost yo more, however.

Well, there you are. As always, it is usually wise to “look before you leap.”

More Cleaning Tips From AJS Carpet Cleaning

Everyone is aware that carpeting involves a significant investment. Like any other valuable investment, your carpet requires frequent and constant care in order to preserve and maintain its useful life and its beauty. A regularly planned and scheduled carpet cleaning and maintenance program, will make your carpet look better, last longer, and contribute meaningfully to a healthier home environment.

Here are 4 steps to a fresh, clean and healthy carpet.

1. Vacuum Frequently. Most people in the know will tell you that the most important element in a good carpet maintenance program is regular and frequent vacuuming. You need to vacuum often. Once a day if possible. If not, at least once per week is necessary. Vacuuming will remove the abrasive soil that filters down and settles among the carpet fibers. While residing there, it causes the fibers to be cut and sliced by pressure from foot traffic or any other heavy mass passing over it. Vacuuming will also remove loose particles of sand, grit, skin scales, hair, leaves, food or bugs, etc., that settle at the base of the fibers. You may not be able to see these, but be aware that your carpet is a filter that will collect all the particulate material that floats in the interior environment of your home, or is tracked upon it.

2. Clean Up Spots and Spills Immediately. This is a key habit to adopt, and could save you a lot of frustration, heartache or just cold cash. With the passage of time, spots and spills that are allowed to remain on the carpet can become permanent stains that will be difficult or impossible to remove. If the carpet is new or has had protector applied recently, fresh spots and stains can be removed by simply blotting with water. Remember. Blot. Don’t rub. Rubbing could cause the stain to spread and just lead to more grief.

You will probably need to remove some spots with a good spotting agent. Be wary of spot removers purchased over the counter. Some of them will leave too much soapy residue and can cause yellowing or re-soiling. Some contain strong oxidizing agents, reducing agents, or bleach. You need to know how to use these safely. If you do not, try one that is recommended by your friendly professional carpet cleaner. Just call the carpet cleaning company and ask for their recommendation. A good company will always be willing to offer their help without charge, but you must be careful to describe the condition exactly. Most importantly, let them know what caused the spill.

Apply the spot cleaner carefully to the spot, with a white terry cloth towel, and blot repeatedly. Never rub it in. If you are not able to remove any spot, or for pet urine or feces, call in your professional carpet cleaning company immediately.

3. Have Your Carpet Professionally Cleaned Often. Most people do not realize how important regular deep cleaning by a competent, certified carpet cleaning company can be. Carpet manufacturers recommend that this is to be done at least once per year. For heavily soiled traffic areas, this should be done more often. If your traffic areas are visibly soiled, you have already waited too long.

4. Have Carpet Protector Re-Applied After Cleaning. Most residencies have stain resistant synthetic, usually nylon, carpet installed. They come pretreated with a protective coating that causes soiling material to slide off the fibers and leave the carpet looking clean for extended periods. With wear however, and after treatment with some of the harsher chemicals used in cleaning, this coating will be removed, causing the carpet to get soiled much more easily, wear faster, and become susceptible to permanent staining. Ask your professional carpet cleaner to re-apply protector after carpet cleaning. This is somewhat costly, but is well worth it.

The amount of money you pay for cleaning your carpet is entirely up to you. In order to decide how much, you will need to ask yourself some questions, like:

Should I do it myself?

Do I want just a quick, cheap carpet cleaning, or do I want a really good cleaning job?

Do I care about the carpet manufacturers recommendations? Do I need to meet their warranty requirements?

Do I need to have a guarantee on the job that is done?

Am I allergic to certain cleaning materials?

Do I need to have environmentally friendly products and procedures?

What kind of carpet cleaners do I want in my home? Unscreened? Neophytes? Experienced, Certified professionals?

How clean do I want my carpets to be?

Clearly, the cheapest way would be for you to do it yourself, but you ought to be aware of the pitfalls. I clean my own carpet, but then, I am a professional carpet cleaner, and so I know what the pros and cons are. If you take the time to learn something about carpet cleaning, then you might save some money by doing it yourself, especially if you vacuum frequently, and are only doing light maintenance cleaning.

Most carpet cleaning websites offer free tips about carpet maintenance and cleaning. You might also visit the

website of The Carpet and Rug Institute for comprehensive information about all aspects of carpet care. Ultimately though, the time will come when you will just have to bite the bullet, and call in a professional,if you want to have clean carpets and a healthy home environment.

Carpet warranties can save the day, if a relevant situation arises, but you will have had to comply with the manufacturer’s requirements. Take the time to read these instructions for your newly installed carpeting, and be diligent in following them. At a minimum, most manufacturers recommend a deep steam cleaning in addition to routine maintenance, at least once every 18 months.

The best carpet cleaning companies will always offer a guarantee on their services. If they cannot clean to your satisfaction, your money will be returned without further obligation. Remember however, that in order to do this, their operation must be professionally organized and control, and thus, will come at a higher cost to you than that of a “fly-by-night” operator.

A good carpet cleaning company, will be able to offer hypoallergenic reagents, and will be proficient in their use and applications. Ask about this. Although it may cost more, it will be worth it if you suffer from any kind of allergies.

Many people nowadays, are very sensitive to environmental issues. It is important to maintain a healthy indoor and outdoor environment both by using appropriate natural organic chemicals, and also by using proper carpet cleaning procedures. Again, many carpet cleaners will charge more for this service. Sometimes they will charge a lot more. You have to decide for yourself how much this will be worth to you.

Carpet cleaners are often required to enter the most private inner sanctums of your home or office. What kind of person would you be comfortable to have there? A cheap carpet cleaning company will usually employ cheap labor without a background check, and therefore impose unnecessary risks on you and your family. Stay away from that.

Finally, if you want the cleanest carpet you can find, get the best professional carpet cleaners you can find. Of course, there are levels and layers in between, but again, you will need to decide for yourself.

The industry experts have determined that the national average price for carpet cleaning is about 30 cents per square foot. Basic prices that I am aware of, range from about 12 cents to over 75 cents per square foot for residential carpet.

Do the research and evaluations, then make your choice.

There are many people around who hold strong beliefs about carpet cleaning or upholstery cleaning, that are simply fallacious. These people are not to be blamed however, because these beliefs are quite common and have been propagated widely over the years, sometimes by recognized and established carpet cleaners.

Let us now examine 5 commonly believed fallacies, and debunk the myths.

1. One carpet cleaning method is as good as any other.

There are indeed many carpet cleaning methods used by a wide spectrum of carpet cleaners. The dry cleaning methods employ dry foam, powdered chemicals, carbonation, buffing or shampooing, and leaves the carpet relatively dry. This helps to avoid the problems usually associated with deep cleaning by hot water extraction, which if not done properly, can leave the carpet so wet, that it smells bad and enhances the growth and development of mold. Carpet manufacturers however, hardly ever recommend these dry cleaning methods. They recommend cleaning by hot water extraction from a truck mounted machine, in order to meet their warranty requirements. With modern equipment and enhanced procedures, the carpet can be fully dry relatively quickly, after hot water extraction. This method is superior to any other currently being used.

2. You should wait as long as possible before cleaning your carpet.

This was not a bad idea long ago before 5th generation nylon carpet was developed, and when cleaning was done with harsh, highly alkaline chemicals that left a soapy residue and re-soiled quickly afterwards. The cleaning machines were not as efficient either, and cleaning technology was more primitive. Nowadays, with the evolution of highly efficient equipment, chemicals and procedures, every competent professional in the business knows how to avoid these problems.

3. You should only clean carpet and upholstery when they look dirty.

This is not a good idea. All fabric need to be cleaned often since they naturally collect dirt. Many times, most of this dirt cannot be seen easily, but contaminants, allergens and extreme soil can build up and cause health problems, and also damage to the fabric. That is why the manufacturers recommend carpet cleaning by hot water extraction at least annually.

4. Bleach is good for removing stains.

No. Do not use bleach on your carpet. Beach will remove the color.

Most bleaches are oxidizing agents and are sometimes referred to as strippers. They act by transferring oxygen, and sometimes other halogens, to the material and actually changing the property of the material and removing the color. Sometimes a well-trained professional can use it with care to successfully remove a stain that will not come out by any other method, but leave this to the professionals. Otherwise be prepared to pay dearly to re-color or patch the spot.

5. There is a magical space-age stain remover that will take out any spot or stain from fabric.

Don’t believe that. There is no universal solvent that you can use on your carpet or upholstery safely or effectively. Such a miracle product just does not exist. Professionals know that, and that is why they will carry several different kinds of spotters and stain removers on their truck.

Be wary of anyone who propagates these myths.

Check out their credentials and call in a certified carpet cleaning company, with trained, experienced professionals.
